Welcome Log ⬡ 02

Welcome to The Library!

Welcome, everyone, to the Library! As you wander your way in, wake up at a desk, or descend an elevator, the library's ambiance is, well... the same as it always is. Comforting-but-not. Warm-but-cold. Empty-but-populated. And, as always, there are certain things going on that just might make settling in a little easier.

Information Desk

⬡ Maps

At the Information Desk, there will be a large stack of looseleaf graph paper and a surplus of pencils, to more easily enable anyone who wishes to draw their own map of the library. The pencils will only be able to write on blank paper given to characters by library activities, and not on any of the books.

⬡ Stationery

Next to the graph paper, there will be a stack of blank notebooks and a haphazard pile of pens. The pens will only be able to write in the notebooks, on characters' personal belongings, and on skin.

All three of these items are semi-limited; somehow characters will only be able to make one stack of items as tall as they are once they've been removed from the desk.

Notebooks and pens will be provided in assorted colors in shades of blue, purple, white (and grey) and teal.

The Cafe menu will also showcase more typical cafe fare, from teas and coffees, to standard hot chocolates, to pastries, donuts, and sandwiches.

The Search Bar will also bring up whatever else characters could possibly want.

As always, movies playing at any given time are randomized, but this month there is a higher chance of movies playing with themes of new beginnings.

Ocean Floor 4

⬡ Room 4575

Located in room 4575 on Ocean Floor 4 will be a large table with an inordinate amount of self-help books, revolving around themes of "New Year, New You" and "New Year’s Resolution Ideas And How To Achieve Each Of Them." Alongside the books will be a stack of worksheets, asking questions about characters' goals and "resolutions" - all appearing to be photocopied haphazardly from a different book entirely.

It would appear as though the intent was for there to be a somewhat therapeutic book club meeting, focused on improving oneself.

In practice, the room itself somehow has taken on a somewhat oppressive air, as though there's someone staring at you and judging your life choices, even if you're alone in the room.

I don't know if I'd call it easy... I've still got a few years to go before I can even take the exam.

[ there's something apprehensive in her voice... after all, nothing that takes three years, hours upon hours of extracurricular training, and has such a low pass threshold is ever easy. she knew that going in, though, so it's no big deal, probably.

Oh, I'm not saying the work is easy. (He waves his pen in the air,) Every exam is a lot of work. Taking classes, doing homework, studying and practicing for days... but it's easy to know when you've reached your goal when you have a neat test at the end of things.

(Unlike other things in life that don't have tests so you just sort of have to guess when you're ready.)

Civil service. Serving the people, listening to people, helping those in need...

(Still not actually explaining.)

Mm, but the exam is just the beginning, really. There's a lot more work to do once I have my license.

[ there's so much more to it than that, but whatever. eventually, she stops spinning to peer at him curiously from over the back of the chair. ]

Sounds a little like hero work. Does that mean you're a hero, too?

Hmm... like finding a guild and work. Establishing a name for yourself? If you ask me, that sounds like something to worry about later, though.

(Pass that exam first! Take on the first step.

Oh no... but that question? He lets out a small laugh! Claude, a hero? Duke von Riegan, a hero? Heh.)

Nah, nothing that grand. (He's writing something down.) It's usually more... bureaucratic.

A guild? Like... in a game?

[ what. what does that have to do with hero work. ]

I guess that's... sort of right. I'm already working as a sidekick for my internship, so I should be fine to start out. But I do have to get more popular if I"m going to get more work.

Ohhhhh, so you're a politician, huh?

(Why on earth would she think this is a game!!

But this really does sound like some sort of a mercenary system haha. You train to become a mercenary, take an exam at the academy to become a certified hero. You go out and have to make a name for yourself. Maybe apprentice under a knight or something? And the more popular you get, the easier it is to get jobs. Hm.)

Everything's a popularity contest.

(A HEAVY, DRAMATIC SIGH. It's hard to tell if he's being serious or not.)

Got it. (Winks! She figured him out. Well done.) Pretty boring, right? At least, it doesn't sound nearly as interesting as being a hero.

Yeah... that's never been my favorite part about it.

[ being in direct competition with your best friends sucks! but it is what it is.

...why the wink, though. this guy's pretty weird, huh? she'll just ignore it for now. ]

Maybe it's boring for someone like me, but you must like something about it, right? Why else would you do it?

(Because she got it right?)

Hah, you've got me there. (There sure are perks to being a Duke.) It's a lot of work but someone has to do it.

And who knows? Maybe I can do some good while I'm at it.

Well, yeah, that's supposed to be the point of politics, isn't it? To help people?

[ going back to spinning in her chair... it's more fun to talk like this. ]

It's like hero work, but... more talking, less fighting. It's still supposed to help people, even if it doesn't always work out that way. But you'd probably know about that better than I would.

You would think. (He twirls the pen in his hand idly,) Sometimes when you're high up, you don't bother looking down. It's a mess, really.

(And it's the common people that end up paying the price for the decisions a bunch of nobles made without them.)

But it wouldn't really be a job if it was easy.

(But back to business! Pen to paper!)

"This goal is important to me because...?"

Sounds like you know from experience.

[ curious! but, okay, since we're moving on... ]

It's important because I want to help my family, and save as many people as I can.

[ spin spin ]

Is your home particularly dangerous?

(The saving people thing...)

Sort of. There wouldn't be any need for heroes if it weren't, you know?

[ the spinning slows as she considers something, but she seems to shake it off. ]

It's not usually that bad, but there's always a villain breaking the law or accidents that put people in danger or whatever.

I guess you have a point there, huh...

( There can’t be heroes without villains or some other sort of injustice to fight against. That’s what makes them heroes, right? )

There’s always someone causing trouble for the little guy. ( His tone drags some, almost thoughtful, ) It’s good that there are people you can count on to make things right, though.

( And he makes... another note? What is he even actually writing hmmm. )

Exactly! There’s always someone who needs help for some reason or another, and I want to be the kind of person who can give it to them.

[ eventually the spinning does slow, though she doesn’t quite stop. ]

So, are you taking notes on everyone? Is there something you're trying to figure out about us?

[ is this like a deku's hero notebook kind of thing or ]

(Honestly he feels like her spinning is some how related to her focus and with it slowing down, he's wondering if she's starting to zone in on something. Ooh might be time to start planning his retreat.)

Just getting to know the people here. We're all from different worlds so something like this seems like an easy way to get familiar.

(He says having not really said much himself.)

[ hmmm. the chair keeps spinning slowly, and ochako never loses her smile, though she does watch him curiously whenever the chair is turned that way. ]

Yeah, but you're asking all these questions but not answering any for yourself. Aren't we allowed to get to know you, too?

(He holds the tip of his pen against the paper. It's a good thing this is a ballpoint pen or else he'd just be leaving a big ol' ink stain there. He's watching her now and thinking about her answers. A girl who wants to be a hero. To help her family and save people... She doesn't seem like a bad person and he slides a blank sheet of paper over towards her.)

(The questions on the paper.)

[ ignoring the paper, she flashes him a grin and kicks her feet a little to give the chair a little momentum. ]

You could start by telling me your name.

I don't think that's on the paper but I'll let it slide this time.

That's what I - ohhhh, I guess you don't know about honorifics, do you?

[ haha. anyway, she's not explaining it!! not yet. ]

Mm, but if that were true, wouldn't you have done the worksheet for yourself first?

You mean like "Lord" or "Professor?" (Tilting his head a bit. He's not familiar with.. "San" or any other titles that might come at the end of a name.) I'm not really a fan.

(So just Riegan or Claude is fine. Claude preferably but... hm. Compromise for now.)

What? No one said I actually had to write my answers down. (Twirling his pen. Is it breaking a rule if it was never really a rule in the first place?) No one's collecting our responses anyway.

Well, yeah, there are honorifics for those, too. It's just polite, but if you really don't like it...

[ that's claude's prerogative and he didn't say out loud that she can call him by his first name so she won't!! ]

No one except you, huh? What are you going to do with all these answers when you're finished, anyway?
